How many great men have I met in my life? Would they fit inside our house, or even our living room? I would include our two dads in there, not because of who they are necessarily, but more what they achieved. Despite all the success at the fishing my dad had, I’d say that possibly his greatest achievement have come latterly with the publication of three books and of course the fisherman’s memorial statue. K’s dad obviously has the commitment to Scottish independence over most of his adult life. To think what he might have achieved had he lived this long is sad, but that legacy is not forgotten by the countless people involved. Globally. Now that is an impact.
Who else gets in? Maybe that’s it. Our two dads, sitting enjoying a cup of tea and a comfy seat in our living room. Hell they’d even fit inside Thoreau’s hut no problem, three chairs after all for society is it not? What is it that we are lacking, and I include myself, that we are not producing more men like that? Maybe it’s just me and my narrow social circle. I don’t know who they are, and that’s probably the problem, but I’m ok with just those two guests anyway.
