All wisdom is the reward of a discipline, conscious or unconscious…cultivate reverence. And that is how knowledge is accrued, by being an extremist, by taking it to the levels of obsession that can only bring true understanding. All the great thinkers, religious or otherwise went through horrendous ordeals of discipline, physically, mentally and spiritually. Nothing came without effort, nothing comes naturally, not even enlightenment. It took the Buddha years of wandering and learning, having cast off his previous princely life. It takes hours and hours of countless effort to achieve a bodybuilder’s physique, not just ‘roids. Odin hung on a tree for nine night in order to gain the wisdom of the runes but he did not know it was going to be nine. It might have been a year, he was willing to face that. Jesus wandered in the desert for 40 days and nights.
“What’s the secret to your song writing ability Elton John?”
“Well I’ve been doing it a long time”.
Whether or not any of this is unconscious I’d argue; how many examples of someone achieving wisdom through a dream is there? I’m not sure. There is far more examples of it being through effort, which is the area I’m most interested in anyway. This book is getting towards the end. I should’ve maybe looked to one with more pages as it was always intended to be daily, but another one exactly the same came in the mail the other day. What next year will bring is still out for debate.
